In this part of the Make Up Basics series, we'll be venturing into the world of concealers and correctors which for most people is a pretty essential part of the whole make up experience.

Concealer does exactly what its name suggests, conceals. As with pretty much every other make up product, concealers come in powder, liquid and cream formulations with varying degrees of pigmentation and shades as well as a multitude of packaging designs.

Concealers are generally more pigmented versions of foundations and more often than not has a more creamy consistency so as to apply the most colour and blend seamlessly into the skin. The goal is to hide imperfections yet having it still look natural.

Here are some basic guidelines to help you select concealers based on your needs:

For under eye circles : Try to go a shade or two lighter than your skin tone or foundation shade so as to add a brightening effect and make your eyes look more awake, fresh and less fatigued.

For overall cover ups : You'll want your concealer to match your skin tone and foundation perfectly so it blends in seamlessly into your skin. Applying a lighter concealer onto pimples for instance will only draw more attention to the area instead of hiding it.

For highlighting : Concealers are often also use to highlight. Similar to covering up under eye circles, choose a couple shades lighter than your skin tone and foundation and apply on the areas of your face where you want to bring out your features.

Correctors can be a little daunting to dabble in but with a bit of know how and understanding of the different shades of correctors (and some practice), it is a task anyone can master. Generally foundation and concealers are sufficient to achieve that flawless complexion finish but in the event of more intense discolourations, we'll apply a corrector to neutralize the spot or area before our concealer application.

Since correctors are typically non-skin colour matching, here's a general guideline to the colours you might come across when looking for correctors:

Peach/Salmon/Bisque/Light Pink/Orange : This is possibly the most commonly used type of corrector as it helps to alleviate dark under eye circles. Light and medium skintones can opt for light to medium versions of peach, salmon and bisque while darker complexions can benefit from orange-toned correctors. In some cases, it can also be used to help neutralize bruises, tattoos, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, birthmarks and dark spots.

Green/Mint : Another common corrector color is green which is used to cancel out redness such as acne, blemishes, vascular birthmarks and broken capillaries.

Lavender : Lavender neutralizes yellow tones such as recovering bruises as well as brighten dull and sallow complexions.

Blue : For those with fair skin, blue can help add a little radiance to the complexion. It is also used to tone down orange tones caused by overtanning or bronzing.

Yellow : Similar to peach/salmon/bisque correctors, yellow correctors cancel out purple/blue discolourations. When applied on eyelids for instance, it provides a neutralized base to apply eyeshadow. Yellow also provides a brightening effect and is commonly used to brighten up the under eye area as well as overall radiance.

If you're familiar with the concept of colour wheels, having one handy on your computer (they are available for free online and easily searchable via Google Images) or a physical print out of it helps determine which corrector colours to use. Always keep in mind that colours on opposite ends of the colour wheel work best to cancel each other out. If the colour wheel is a bit confusing to use, the simplified guide above is more than sufficient as reference.

When it comes to concealers and correctors, always remember that less is more. If you've chosen the right formula and shade for yourself, there is no need to pile on the product. Don't forget to set your concealer with a powder to avoid creasing and to keep product in place.

Brush : Brushes with densely packed brush hairs are ideal for concealer application. If you're using a flat concealer brush, pat the product lightly on the area you want to conceal and use light short strokes to blend out the edges. With rounder types of concealer brushes, stipple the product onto the areas you're working with and gently buff out the edges to blend.

Fingers : Clean fingers are great tools for applying concealer because the warmth from your fingers helps the product to smooth on easily. Tap the product on the desired areas and blend the edges.

Sponges : Beauty sponges can also be used for application. Dampen your sponge and apply similarly as you would your with your fingers.

Concealers and correctors can be applied before or after foundation. Applying concealers and corrector after foundation usually results in having to use less product than application prior to foundation.

Correctors are usually applied before concealers to neutralize the colour of imperfections (discolourations) in the area of application. This allows concealers to perform seamlessly an efficiently in cases of severe discolouration.

When applying cream correctors and concealers on top of powder foundation, spritz a refresher mist (not a setting/finishing mist/spray) to dampen the skin before application.

Brushes with synthetic bristles are excellent for applying liquid and cream versions of correctors and concealers as they tend to soak up less (if any) product, which means you won't be wasting a lot of the product getting absorbed by the brush hairs.

Natural hair brushes are usually more porous and therefore allows for some product absorption. Dampen the brush to help with blending and lessen product absorption by brush hairs.

I know I haven't reviewed much Asian brands/products in the past mainly because I don't particularly indulge in them but after watching Michelle Phan's January 2013 Favorites video (here) awhile back, I thought why not give it a try. After all, we had a few Holika Holika stores in town.

For those unfamiliar with the brand, Holika Holika is a South Korean brand of skincare and cosmetics established in 2010 with a magical theme attached to the brand. Holika Holika is also supposed to mean beauty-holic.

PACKAGING

The product's outer packaging/box is a pretty sea green colour with mostly Korean descriptions and information. It's nice that they also had a panel with the product info and ingredients list in English as well for us non-Korean proficient beauty lovers.

As for the actual product packaging/bottle, it's a sturdy glass bottle in the shape of a jelly cup with a sea green cap that comes with a spatula applicator attached. The bottle itself isn't quite travel friendly and I'd love if they had a travel version of this for sale as well. Alternatively, I suppose I could just transfer a little bit into a small jar for that purpose.

I've had mine for a little while and they've recently changed the packaging design so if you're thinking of getting it, it might not be in the exact same packaging as the one I have here.

THE PRODUCT

When it comes to the product itself, it really had an interesting texture (which unfortunately my photography skills aren't able to capture properly). I've tried other BB creams in the past and this had a completely unique texture, almost pudding-like.

The BB cream is available in 2 shades and only comes in a size of 40ml. The product has a pleasant light fruity scent to it and a sponge is included in the box for application. Also fret not, this UV Protection Sun Care Cosmetic has an SPF of 20 PA++ (although it doesn't mention UVA/UVB protection on the packaging).

APPLICATION

Product application is pretty straight forward and easy. I spread a small amount on the back of my hand with the spatula before using my hands to dot the product onto my face. I haven't used the sponge included though as I've been buffing the product on my face with either the real Techniques Stippling Brush or their Expert Face Brush which works rather well for me.

The sales assistant at the store where I'd bought the product from advised me to apply with a sponge for that dewy glow as applying by means of fingers seem to mute the dewy effect.

Although the product had an initial pudding-like texture, it spreads beautifully on skin and has a very light almost watery feel on skin during application. Apparently there's mint water in the product as well which gives the skin a slight cooling sensation. Very nice for those hot summer days and tropical climates.

THE FINISH

The Aqua Petit Jelly sets to a gorgeous soft focus satin finish while making my complexion look brighter and smoother with decent coverage. For me it worked great minimizing pore appearance too. I also loved that it performed quite well through my sweating during the day (yes, thank our hot and humid weather). However, I do recommend light powdering for extremely oily skin types just in case.

Overall my skin feels hydrated and evened out without looking like I've caked on my make up which is a winner in my book.

WHERE TO BUY

If you're interested to try this product out, it's available at all Holika Holika outlets (testers available in store) for RM71.90 (at time of purchase) or online at Sasa for US$15.90 (~RM49.20).

There are so many different variations and formulations in stores (drugstore/high street, mid-range, high end) today and the many types can get a little overwhelming at times, especially for anyone who has just begun treading the beauty scene. Here is a basic overview of what's out there:

Let's start with the most commonly sold type of foundation. Pretty much every make up counter or display will have their version of the liquid foundation. As the name suggests, it has a liquid-like consistency and depending on the formulation, some can be slightly thicker than others. These are normally packaged in bottles (glass/plastic/acrylic) with or without a pump or in squeeze tubes. Liquid foundations are available in forms specifically for oily/combination skin types as well as normal/dry skin options. Coverage offered varies depending on the product itself but you can expect sheer to medium coverage in general and is normally buildable. The finish also varies based on the product formulation ranging from matte, demi matte to satin and dewy.

Due to the thickness of the product, cream foundations are better suited for dry skin types. Normal skin types might be able to pull off wearing these types of foundations when set properly. If you have oily/combination skin, I would recommend that you opt for a different formulation altogether or layer this on top of an oil control primer and set with translucent or oil absorbing powder. Oil blotting papers may come in handy as well to combat shine unless you'll be in an air conditioned room for most of the day. Cream foundations are very easy to apply and blends well. You can expect medium to full coverage.

Gel or mousse type foundations generally offer medium to full coverage and are thicker in consistency than liquid foundation but thinner than creams. Words like whipped, souffle or creme might also be used to label these products. These types of foundations doesn't feel thick or heavy when applied and are great if you want a more flawless finish.

A lot of people opt for mineral foundations for it's natural/mineral ingredients. These are available in various forms (i.e. loose powder, pressed powder, liquid) and usually offers light to medium coverage with a natural, demi matte finish. Most mineral make up is gentle enough to be used on sensitive skin types and the mineral properties can be good for the skin.

Another widely available type of foundation is the powder foundation or in some cases known as the 2-way cake. Some of these powders tend to complement their liquid counterparts but can also be used on its own. For those with dry skin types, some formulations may not be suitable as they accentuate dry patches. In those cases, moisturize well beforehand and try using a hydrating mist after foundation application. Some powder foundations may oxidize on oily skin types so test it out first before purchasing.

If you're not looking for too much coverage, then a tinted moisturizer is a safe bet to even out your skin tone or if you only need a hint of colour.

BB and CC (now even DD) Creams are largely popular in Asia but has also gained attention everywhere else. These are a cross between tinted moisturizers and foundations with added skin benefits. Today these types of products come in various forms (i.e. liquid, gel, cushion compacts, cream, powder) and provide generally light to medium coverage depending on the product. BB and CC creams tend to contain skin treating properties to help improve skin condition and provide hydration. Typically, BB and CC creams comes with some sun protection as well.

It is very important to select the shade of foundation that matches your skin the best. It shouldn't be visibly lighter or darker when applied. Here are some simple guidelines to identifying your shade:

If testers are available, swipe the shade you think would best suit you along your jaw line (not your arm). Then swipe a shade lighter and darker next to the shade you've selected earlier just to be sure.

The shade that blends effortlessly (disappears into your skin) into your face and neck is your shade.

For powder type foundations, consider to go a shade lighter if you have oily/combination skin as the product might oxidize on your skin and you might appear visibly darker towards the end of the day.

Most importantly, choose a formula that best suits your skin type (i.e. normal, oily, combination, dry, sensitive).

Brush : Use a make up brush that works best for you be it the traditional flat tapered synthetic, duo fibre/stippling, flat top, dense, angled or the likes. Allows for a more even distribution of product. Streaking may occur but can easily be remedied by patting on the streaks to blend or swirling the brush to buff in the foundation. Suitable for all foundation types. Might not work too well with BB and CC creams.

Clean fingers : The warmth from your fingers can help melt the product and ease application as the foundation would be able to glide on smoother and blend quicker. Most suitable for applying BB and CC creams as well as tinted moisturizers. Less precise and uneven distribution when used to apply other types of foundation.

Sponge or Beauty Blender : Dampen the sponge, squeeze out any excess water and pick up some of the product with the sponge. Apply to the face and blend by using patting and rolling motions. Suitable to use with most foundation types. Might not work with loose powder and some mineral foundations.

2-Way Cake/Foundation : Apply with a medium dense brush for a lighter coverage or apply with a dampened sponge for a heavier coverage.

Mineral Foundation : Most mineral make up is best applied with either a kabuki or a dense brush as you will need to buff in the make up to the skin for the desired effect.

Setting your liquid/cream/gel/mousse foundation with powder foundation (or a tinted powder) provides additional coverage. Be careful not to cake on the powder to avoid making your foundation look patchy throughout the day.

Setting your liquid/cream/gel/mousse foundation with a translucent powder helps to absorb any excess oil and ensures your foundation stays at its best as the day progresses. Too avoid looking too powdery, lightly sweep off any excess powder after letting it set for 5-10 minutes. A light mist of a hydrating spray like MAC Fix+ could help tone down the powdery look.

Mineral foundations don't necessarily require setting as the product is buffed directly onto skin. However, if you may sweep a light setting powder such as a mineral veil atop foundation for a subtle glow.

A setting spray can be your new best friend if you need your make up to stay fresh for longer periods of time. Gently mist your entire face with the spray bottle held about 6-8 inches in front of you.

For only $10/month with the promise to receive 4-5 deluxe beauty samples, the offer is enticing. Add to that all the rave reviews from the online beauty community and beauty guru endorsements, it's a winning formula!

Even though I live all the way here on the other side of the world, in Malaysia, I managed to get a hold of these subscription boxes (bag?) for quite awhile and have only recently decided not to renew my subscriptions.

Would you believe Birchbox started out as a university project? That little tidbit aside, it is quite possibly one of the most popular beauty box subscription service in the US. They've expanded their online store and offer Birchbox exclusive brands as well as a men's version of the uber popular box.

Every now and again I'll get some awesome items in my monthly box. That being said, I wasn't too excited to receive perfume samples, foil packets and samples that were way too small to be considered deluxe samples. I didn't enjoy receiving skincare samples either mainly because I don't steer too far away from my existing skincare regime since it already works well for me.

From the monthly sneak peek videos to the website offerings, you'd expect to get products that you're actually excited to try but somehow I never seem to receive any of those cool products they seem to feature regardless of what I answer in my profile. Some of the items that I've been wanting to try I end up receiving in a different subscription service altogether.

I do love the packaging though. I use my boxes to organize my make up drawers and for storage. I have a few more empty ones stashed in my room for future use. They make great gift boxes too! I half wanted to continue my subscriptions solely for the box itself. It's also nice when they include little lifestyle extras like chocolates (didn't really enjoy the mints) and hair ties. Love those. And it's fun receiving those cute little nail polishes from Color Club and Ruffian.

There were a few new finds that I enjoyed through my time with Birchbox like the No. 4 Clarifying Shampoo (love the scent and it was the perfect size for travel), twisties hair ties and the Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle spray. I also loved the mini samples of Benefit's Porefessional (perfect to pop in my travel makeup bag!) and the full size Stila products I occasionally receive.

ipsy or formerly known as MyGlam is the brainchild of the beauty queen of YouTube herself, Michelle Phan. Instead of boxes, ipsy delivers cute little bags/pouches filled with beauty products (and tools). They started off with a fixed set of products and since June 2013 started offering some variety in their bag contents base on your beauty profile.

Generally as far as sample sizes go, ipsy wins hands down against Birchbox. It is very rare that you'll receive foil packets, useless perfume samples or samples so tiny you don't know what to do with them. However, the quality and selection of products is debatable. Sometimes it just seems a little meh.

I like the fact that you receive little bags as it was different from all the other beauty sampling services in the market. Most of the bags are quite nicely made and very functional. I've used the September 2012 bag as a wristlet/clutch to dinners and such, and pretty much most of the others to organize my handbag/purse, keep my padlocks, keys, medicine, make up and so much more. I know I could probably just as easily sew some up myself but it's nice to receive them in the mail with some additional goodies inside.

The subscription has introduced me to Dermstore which is at least a website I can shop from. Wasn't too excited for the Juice Beauty and eclos samples (which were quite a decent size mind you) as I'm not too fond of herbal scented products. As good as natural is for us, I've got to like the scent of it to be want to use the product. I finally got to try zoya nail polishes too.

There were a few brands I could do without in my bag but seems to make a frequent appearance through out my subscription: Mirenesse, Marbella, Starlooks, Be A Bombshell, Mica Beauty, Coastal Scents and Pacifica to list a few.

I was on the other hand excited to receive products from Sexy Hair, emcosmetics, La Fresh, Coola and Chella. The Chella Ivory Lace highlighting pencil is my current favourite brow highlight the brow gel is a travel essential for me as well. I loved receiving Urban Decay and NYX too.

I can still check my Glam Room on the website to see products that I could've been receiving had I continued to subscribe and honestly, some months are good and some months aren't so much. There definitely are one or two products that I would've like receiving and some that I would prefer some of the other options.

Hi guys! Let's get started with the series with an introduction to face primers or also commonly referred to as make up base. Basically what it does is help prep your face for make up application. Some sunscreens have also been formulated to act as a make up base but since these contain SPF, they are best suited for day wear.

Primers/bases are part of the skin prepping step when applying make up and commonly comes in either gel and mousse formulations. Generally, primers help to smoothen skin texture, fill in fine lines and mask pores to enable foundation and concealer to glide on better and stay on longer through out the day.

Make up companies have been getting creative with their range of primers. There are primers to help colour correct, illuminate, blemish-friendly, treat dark spots, control excess oil/sebum, hydrate and more to suit your skin needs. Choose a primer that suits your skin type and condition. Don't hesitate to ask for samples so you can try the product and avoid purchasing a primer that isn't suitable for you.

Use primers after your skincare routine (i.e. after moisturizer or sunscreen) but before applying foundation and concealer. You can opt to apply the product with a synthetic (natural fibres are porous and tend to absorb product making you use up even more than you need) make up brush like the MAC 190 or a duo fibre brush like the MAC 187. Alternatively, clean fingers would get the job done too (which is my personal preference). Leave it to set for about 10-15 minutes before starting on the next step.

If you already have generally good skin, save the primer/base for special occasion or sparingly on areas you feel you need help with.

If you have sensitive skin, test a small amount of the product on your skin first to see how your skin reacts to the product. Try also to look for product that are formulated specifically for sensitive skin.

For casual/daily make up application, you can skip primer/base altogether and jump straight to foundation. If you like, apply only in areas of your face that needs it (i.e. enlarged pores, fine lines, your T-zone, dry patches, etc) and blend outwards.

If you have blemishes/acne, try a primer formulated with salicylic acid or tea tree oil that helps prime and treat the problem area. Alternatively, skip this step altogether and opt for BB creams instead.

Due to its skin smoothing properties, use it all over the face for a porcelain, high definition, air brushed finish. It helps soften the appearance of scarring as well.

Due to its ability to provide a matte or satin finish on the skin, it is tempting to use these products to keep oil & shine (oily skin) and dry patches & flakiness (dry skin) at bay. However, for those problems, I recommend investing your hard earned cash in a skincare routine that is targeted towards your skin type/condition instead.
The days leading up the Raya festivities (a.k.a. Eid ul Fitr) was surprisingly hectic considering this year was a more somber celebration in KK.

A few days of sore throat later, here I am balancing myself on a gym ball bringing the second chapter of Roshar's workshop to you and wrap up my experience. But first, Happy Eid/Raya to all my muslim brothers and sisters. *smile*

OK now. On to the show!

Basically Day 2 was all about showcasing what we've learnt from the workshop in a fun way. I mean, what's more fun than a fashion show right? Especially with the beautiful kaftans sponsored by the wonderful Faeeza Boutique (Kompleks Karamunsing) and Catch22 -- the adjoining hotel restaurant -- so graciously lending their space for the catwalk stage.

With a little humourous banter by Roshar the Sheikh of the Arabian Night themed show, out came the individual models showcasing the workmanship of their respective make up artists.

When I signed up for the workshop, I had no idea it was gonna have a competition of sorts attached to it. Anyways, it was a fun experience. I had to force myself to not look around as my competitive side can pop up and I lose the fun aspect of the whole workshop. That aside, there were awards for the Top 3 models in the show as well as the Top 3 make up artists.

I was taken by surprise when they announced my name as the 1st runner up in the MUA category. Got me a couple MUFE goodies as well and I love how unexpected that was. Unfortunately I don't have photos of me receiving my prize since I was also the photographer for these shots. 2nd runner up went to Liz, the lovely girl who sat next to me during the workshop.
Wow. Would you believe 6 months has gone by since my last (first?) post here and I wish I had some sort of excuse to justify my absence but really, life happened. Anyways, I think I'm a bit more in tuned with my schedule and let's get the ball rolling again shall we?

Some time in June I received an email from MUAH Studios regarding a make up workshop at Oceania Hotel here conducted by Roshar, an international make up artist from NY/LA. Of course I got super excited and wanted to jump on the opportunity right then and there. Then I saw the price tag. I'm not going to lie, but the RM499 (early bird price) and RM799 (regular price) cost made me hesitate and really consider foregoing the workshop altogether. Fortunately I managed to convince myself on the last day of the early bird promotion that this was going to be an awesome experience and totally worth investing in especially since it isn't often that we get an MUA as established as Roshar in our little city.

Let me start by warning you that this post and the next is going to be quite photo heavy (20+ photos each) so please bear with me through these posts. I am incredibly glad I attended the workshop and definitely learnt some great techniques and tips from Roshar.

If you've never attended Roshar's workshops, I definitely recommend that you do. He has a very informal method of conducting the workshop and is so much fun to learn from. He's very warm and friendly and everyone in the room were not afraid to approach him to ask questions or just chit chat.

While pretty much all of us came with our gigantic case of make up and tools, Roshar packed light. I suppose with experience, there's not much 'just-in-case' products to pack.

Roshar mixed a little MUFE HD Elixir with a silver pigment to create a metallic finish to the eye look. He also thought it would be fun to thrown in a platinum shaggy bob wig just because. I really love the eye socket contouring. He taught us how contouring can be easy when you put face shapes aside and look at the skull/bone structure instead. Interesting concept.

Forgive the fogginess of the shot, the room was super cold and it was pretty warm outside. Silly me for not carrying a lens cleaner but oh well. Food was catered by the hotel's adjoining restaurant, Catch22, and was Middle Eastern inspired and delish! Clearly I was too hungry to snap a photo of the food spread. Oopsie!

Yes, fishy faces in make up is unavoidable. Possibly the best way to find the hollows of your cheeks for that contour color placement. Also, what a difference filled and groomed brows make to a look. Of course you could go a little avant garde and leave out the brows. *grins*

Did some color correction with the foundation I used to contour. It was looking a little orange and Roshar suggested a gray-ish brown color to counter that orange-ness. I used theBalm's Bahama Mama and that definitely did the trick. I didn't have a corresponding cream product for the colors I was using so I used NYX's Jumbo Pencil in Milk as a base. Didn't pop out as much though. I tried foiling the eyeshadows on top of it too but I don't think the eyeshadows I was using work well wet. Gotta improvise!

It's probably kinda late but I just wanted to wish everyone a very Happy New Year this 2013.

So you may have noticed that this is a new blog (possibly since you came here from the old one) and the reason for that is I felt the blog really needed a refresher and 4 years from Blissful Belle to elixelle's Beauty Moments to just Beauty Moments on the same landing is due time for new beginnings. Don't worry, I don't see myself deleting Beauty Moments anytime soon but if I do, chances are I would've migrated (or updated) my posts here.

So this is me officially welcoming you to Casual Vanity (yay!).

January is literally almost over (can you believe it?) and despite the fact that I've been planning to have this in video form, seeing that it might take awhile, why don't I just have it up as a blog post instead of missing it altogether like I did my 2011 favourites (oops!).

If you're interested to find out which were my stand out products of 2012, here we go!

Caution, this is going to be a really long post. You have been warned.

SKIN CARE

I didn't really deviate much from my basic skin care regime last year so I don't have that many products in this category to talk about. Stay tuned for January Favourites for some of the awesome products I've been loving in my new skin care routine!

The biggest standout product for me in terms of Skin Care has to be my Clarisonic Mia. The nifty little device that made the biggest impact to me and one I always pack with me on travels. I just love how it gives a dose of gentle exfoliation to the skin and leaves my skin feeling super clean and smooth, ready for the next steps of my skin care routine. I loved it so much that I recently upgraded to the Mia 2 which has a few additional features with a slight change in design and appearance. My dear trusty Mia is now bringing joy to one of my besties who bought it from me a couple of weeks ago.
Admittedly I get lazy when it comes to taking off make up at night. You know those moments when you're thinking you're ready for la-la-land and you realize you have make up on still? Which is why I love, love, love make up remover towelettes or face cleansing wipes (and they're perfect for travel too, no?). My favourites are the simple Kind To Skin Cleansing Wipes and the Neutrogena Night Calming Make Up Remover Cleansing Towelettes (what a mouthful!). I could be wrong but I think the Neutrogena towelettes are only available in the US but simple is readily available in all Watsons and Guardian stores here.
This is probably one of the categories I'm most excited about. I swear my hair grows at at least double the normal speed (not that I'm complaining) which means hair care if pretty important to me to keep those split ends away and maintain healthy hair. After searching high and low and trying different conditioners and such, it was by chance that I stumbled upon the John Frieda Root Awakening Purify + Nourish Conditioner and the Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Penetrating Oil (seriously, what's with these long product names?) while browsing the hair section at Target during my trip to LA last summer. I am absolutely in love with this combo!! Unfortunately these products aren't available in Malaysia (yet?) so I've had to source for back ups/stock online. The conditioner smells ah-ma-zing and I like the scent of the argan oil. According to Organix Malaysia, they are planning on making the Moroccan Argan Oil line available here soon (it's already available in Singapore).
Since the Toni & Guy Dry Shampoo seems to have been discontinued since they rebranded, I've been on the look out for other brands and while the Tresemme Dry Shampoo looks to have a cult following in the online beauty community, I just wasn't enjoying it as much until the Suave Dry Shampoo which again, is not available in Malaysia (why?!?!). I've read mixed reviews on this product, some saying that they only got 2-3 uses out of the can. I've had mine since last summer and I'm still on the same aerosol can. It's a nice product to use when I need a quick hair refresher on days I don't wash my hair.
The one stand out product for me in this category hands down goes to Soap & Glory's Flake Away body scrub. The best body scrub I've come across so far. I believe it's a salt and sugar scrub mixed in with essential oils and moisturizing goodness. Not only does my body feel renewed and polished, but it just feels super moisturized too!
Now for the good stuff -- make up. While I don't typically use face primer (like I do eye primer), I found myself applying Benefit's The Porefessional on the area surrounding my nose where pores are a little bit more dilated and visible just to tone it down a smidge or two. I'd initially tried a sample but have purchased the full size soon after (well, as soon as I could considering they don't sell Benefit in my city).
Not going to lie, I've been enjoying the Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua foundation some months last year but the stand out foundations (yes, with an 's') for me in 2012 are the Make Up For Ever HD, Urban Decay Naked Skin and L'Oreal True Match. I love the coverage and formula of these 3 foundations the most not just because the colour matches my skin tone pretty perfectly, but it just makes my complexion look flawless and not look like I've caked on a ton of make up.
For awhile I loved the elf Translucent Mattifying Powder to set my make up but after trying the Rimmel Stay Matte Translucent Powder, there's just no going back. I just feel that although both powders are translucent, elf's seems to have more of a pink undertone as oppose to the yellow undertone in the Rimmel powder which sits with me a little better. If I want a little extra coverage, the L'Oreal True Match Powder works wonderfully!
I've been steering towards matte blushes a lot more in the last year and was surprised at how much I enjoyed Sephora Collection's Blush Me! blushes. The shades I have been alternating between are Rose Rebelle (which I bought during a Sephora clearance online for I'd like to say $5?) and Rose Petal (which I'd gotten at Sephora KL). Rose Rebelle is a slightly darker dusty rose while Rose Petal is a lighter rosy pink -- both of which are matte. I'll slip in an honourable mention here for MAC's Immortal Flower because I've been using that quite a bit too last year.
My bronzer picks for 2012 are Too Faced Chocolate Soleil (love!!) and Topshop's Bronzer in Global. Chocolate Soleil is a gorgeous matte chocolate-y brown bronzer that can easily be used for contouring (and was sold out at IMATS LA last year, I asked). For some reason, I just can't find the Global bronzer in Topshop since I got it. Apparently they phase them out and come out with different collections each season (or every other season? I'm not too sure). Global has more of a satin sheen to it which looks beautiful on skin!
Now I used to think highlighters just emphasize pores and look shimmery on cheeks. Clearly I was either using them wrong or using the wrong product altogether. After a period of time enjoying NARS Nico, I've been enjoying the MAC Mineralized Skin Finish in Redhead as my go to highlighter shade for most of last year. I believe it was a repromote item and I'm so glad I picked it up. So pretty!
OK, so last for face make up is the Urban Decay De-Slick Setting Spray. This is truly the secret to long lasting make up. All I do is mist this all over my face after foundation and powder and then I'd apply the rest of my make up and spritz again. Needless to say I bought the XL bottle of this which was on sale on the UD website.
When it comes to eyes or the eye are in general -- make up-wise that is -- I can't help but be all excited with brows. I know everyone says this but it's so true! Brows really do frame your face and for me, I try to make it a point to at least do my brows when I go out even when I don't have make up on. After trying out so many different brow products, the Prestige Cosmetics Brow Perfection brow pencil has totally won me over. It's the perfect dark brown for my brows to match my super black hair (well, I've recently added in highlights but it still works). The pencil has a marbleized core (lead?) and a spoolie at the end. I was in Sasa one day, saw the display and decided to give it a shot and fortunately for me it worked out great!
Next products that stood out to me are the L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes and tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes! mascaras. These have been the 2 mascaras that I've been reaching for every time I do my make up. The L'Oreal mascara gives such great volume to my lashes I just love how full it makes them look! The one I have is a waterproof formula and holds curls really well without smudging or flaking. For a more natural look, I'd tend to go for the tarte mascara which again holds curls well and doesn't budge while giving a natural lengthening effect to my lashes.
For the most part, I've been dipping into both of the Urban Decay Naked palettes (Naked & Naked2) for most of my looks. The formula is just so smooth and blendable (not to mention pigmented!). My fave shades from the palettes are:

Brow highlight : Foxy (Naked2)

Inner corner highlight : Booty Call (Naked2)

Lid & outer corner colour : Smog, Darkhorse, Toasted, Hustle (Naked), Snakebite and Hustle (Naked2)

Crease/contour colour : Naked (Naked), Tease (Naked2)

My favourite eye liner is the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Zero and Whiskey (yup, the colours of the double ended pencil from the original Naked palette) and I have them as a double ended pencil (with back ups) and full size pencil. I know that a lot of people much prefer Perversion compared to Zero because the black is more potent, but I just feel that Perversion has a softer formula/texture and smudges on me. Whilst Bourbon is also a nice brown colour, I like Whiskey a little better.

OK, now only a couple more categories to go after this. For lips, I've been loving the EOS Lip Balms whether it be in the spherical or stick forms. My favourite flavours(?) are Sweet Mint and Vanilla Bean. These lip balms are super moisturizing, non-sticky, has the right amount of slip for that balm-y feel and doesn't flake on me. It just works really well on my dry lips.

As for actual lip products (as in make up lippies), I have been obsessed with the Revlon Color Burst Lip Butters and have so many it's just crazy! The colour pay off is amazing and it isn't drying and for the most part, doesn't flake on me. I love every colour I have but the stand outs are Berry Smoothie, Sugar Plum (which was a surprise favourite for me) and Lollipop.

If you've been following my blog for awhile now (or you know me in person), you might already know how much I enjoy my Sigma brushes (and they're definitely amazing quality). Last year I branched out and tried more brushes from different brands and I've been loving some of them a lot!

I've been using the MAC Brush Cleanser for the longest time now and while at IMATS last summer I made sure to drop by the Parian Spirit booth this time around. I missed out on the chance to get this the year before and wish I had. This is by far the best brush cleaner I've tried to date! It has a citrus scent and cleans brushes like no other. Super quick, super clean and dries almost instantaneously. If only this is sold here. Le sigh.

Last but most definitely not least, my favourite perfumes/scents! Admittedly I tend to hoard perfumes and do own quite a bit now. Despite all that, I find myself gravitating to 3 bottles in particular. The first is Britney Spear's Midnight Fantasy which is a very sweet fruity scent that isn't too sweet like Aqualina Sugar (I prefer Sugar Sensual if you're wondering) and is just very long wearing on me.

The next one is Juicy Couture's Viva La Juicy (I know, I know, everyone and their mother loves this one). This scent is softer than Midnight Fantasy and doesn't wear quite as long but I just love the scent of it a lot. This and Midnight Fantasy are pretty much my handbag/purse staples since I filled my Travalos with these and lug it around everywhere. Oh, and Travalos are amazing! No need for sample/miniature perfume buying anymore cos you can just fill it up (easily might I add) with your choice perfume.

Whenever I'm not spritzing Midnight Fantasy or Viva La Juicy on myself, I'd be reaching for Burberry Brit Sheer which is a fresh fruity floral scent that layers beautifully over Victoria Secret's Lost In Fantasy body mist. The notes are crisp and the perfume very long wearing. Do not be fooled by the 'Sheer' in the name.

Alrighty then, that's it for my top beauty pick for 2012. Phew, that was a long list. Imagine if that had been a video, I'd probably be rambling on and on for an hour or so. My January faves won't be as lengthy (I hope) and I might be able to film that (maybe?) or if that fails again, check here for the updates.

Let me know what you think I should try or what products you've been loving this past year in the comments below. Oh, did I mention there'll be a giveaway coming up really soon? Stay tuned!
